We had the pleasure of sitting down with Michael Hauck, CEO of ECM (Espresso Coffee Machines) and son of the company’s founder as they celebrate more than five decades in the coffee industry. Michael’s father began by serving as the exclusive importer for the most renowned Italian brands, gathering deep insights and expertise that would eventually fuel the creation of his own products in 1996. ECM has been part of the coffee industry for more than 50 years, and for nearly 30 of those years, they have been producing premium espresso machines for households and the gastronomy sector, as well as espresso grinders. During this time, ECM has witnessed countless changes, trends, and cycles. What remains at the core of the ECM brand after all this time?
The core of ECM remains our passion for excellence. While trends in the coffee industry shift constantly, we have stayed true to the timeless principles that define us. Our machines are a seamless blend of classic Italian design and precise German engineering, and it is this combination that drives our innovation. The ambition to elevate the espresso experience has been with us from the very beginning and continues to guide every decision we make. Every day, we focus on perfecting what we do best: creating the finest espresso machines possible. This unwavering dedication has kept us at the forefront of the industry for decades.
Walk us through the process of how a new ECM machine is born. What are the key steps that take an idea from concept to a successful product?
It all begins with our customers. We listen carefully to their feedback, paying close attention to their needs and desires. The ideas for our new machines often stem directly from the challenges or opportunities they highlight. Once we identify areas for improvement, we take all the time and effort needed to turn those ideas into reality. This extra step sets us apart from the rest. Our R&D team dives deep into research, exploring how to solve these challenges with innovative materials, cutting-edge systems, and new designs. The development process requires a team effort, with every department contributing to ensure the final product meets expectations. We test and refine each idea until it meets our high standards for performance, durability, and beauty. The craftsmanship aspect cannot be overstated. Every machine that leaves our production line reflects the skill and care of the people who built it. The key to ECM’s success is not just about creating a good product—it’s about continuously responding to our customers’ needs with the best possible solutions.
ECM machines are known for their premium quality and design. But what would you say is the key differentiator of an ECM machine?
Our machines are crafted to last. An ECM machine will remain valuable for years to come. When crafting a piece, we aspire to serve not only our current customers but also the next generation. To achieve that, we run our machines through the most rigorous tests, carefully select build material, and pay special attention to every detail so that each design is timeless. But that’s not enough. For an ECM machine to maintain its value, we must ensure that our brand stays strong over time. Owning an ECM machine is a symbol of quality and a guarantee of excellent results. That brand status can only be earned with time and maintained through consistency. Creating products that endure, inspire, and continue to uphold the legacy of ECM for years to come.

One of the key projects we are working on is becoming more involved in the coffee community. This also means expanding beyond the home market, reaching into the bar and cafe culture.
